What size wedding cake do I
Yes please! Yum! It’s no secret that one of the biggest reasons I love weddings, other than capturing amazing love moments 😉, is for the wedding cake! They come in all shapes, sizes, designs, colors, etc. One of our favorite details to capture is the cake! So much of our couple’s personalities go into the design of the wedding cake as well as the grooms cake.
One of the most asked questions we get, other than photography related questions, is how big a cake should be for a certain amount of guests. Well, today we have the answer! We reached out to Janette, the owner of All Things Cake in Tulsa, Oklahoma to get an exclusive & comprehensive look into wedding cakes, the sizes, & what you need to know before making your final selection. Janette & her team do well over 250 weddings a year so they know a thing or two about these icing wonders! (I’m still trying to get her to subcontract us as professional taste testers!)
Ok, so before we can talk size, we need to discuss your options for your wedding day! There’s so many ways you can cover a guest count that don’t necessarily have to come from your main wedding cake! Not only can you pull from the grooms cake, but there is the option to have separate sheet cakes already to be served! Believe it or not, a lot of the fancier, high tiered weddings cakes you might see these days are probably going to be mostly faux or fake for show. Now, that’s not to say you can’t have a real cake of 7 tiers, but a lot of time, work, & design goes into making all those gorgeous tiers so the cost will definitely reflect it.
Also in the mix are cupcakes, cake-pops, cake-balls, cool things like donut walls, etc. There are so many options to choose from these days, it’s super important to connect with an amazing cake shop like All Things Cake who can share your vision & help it come to pass!
Janette recommends not stressing about numbers. She says that you should plan to have cake for 75% of your guests through all the methods you choose. I recommend having enough for 80% because I can eat 5% of cake myself! Wait, edit that out. Also factor in if you plan to follow tradition & save your top tier to enjoy on your one year anniversary. Many couples serve cupcakes & only have this one tier to save.
According to Miss Janette, if you are going strictly wedding cake for your guests, then you should estimate a 3 tier cake will serve around 100 guests, a 4 tier will serve 100 – 150 guests, & a 5 tier will serve around 200 guests. Feel free to call Janette or one of her amazing helpers with questions about bigger guest counts.
We hope this look into the world of wedding cakes has helped you with your decision making. Come back soon for our next in depth look into wedding cakes as Janette explains what current trends are now with design as well as flavors of wedding cakes.
We love working with amazing wedding companies who care about our couples as much as we do! We cannot recommend Janette & her team at All Things Cake enough! Tell them Doug & Ashley from My Treasured Memories Photography told you to call!
