How much wedding cake do I need?
Wedding Cake:
Yes please! Yum! It’s no secret that one of the biggest reasons we LOVE being wedding photographers, other than capturing amazing love moments ๐, is for the wedding cake! They come in all shapes, sizes, designs, colors, etc. One of our favorite details to capture is the cake! So much of our couple’s personalities go into the design of the wedding cake.

How Much Wedding Cake Basics:
Ok, so before we can talk size, we need to discuss your options for your wedding day! There’s so many ways you can cover a guest count that don’t necessarily have to come from your main wedding cake! Not only can you pull from the grooms cake, but there is the option to have separate sheet cakes already to be served! Believe it or not, a lot of the fancier, high tiered weddings cakes you might see these days are probably going to be mostly faux or fake for show. Now, that’s not to say you can’t have a real cake of 7 tiers, but a lot of time, work, & design goes into making all those gorgeous tiers so the cost will definitely reflect it.
Also in the mix are things like cupcakes, cake-pops, cake-balls, cool things like donut walls, etc. There are so many options to choose from these days, it’s super important to connect with an amazing baker like Miss Laura to make your vision come to life!
Guest Count:
Miss Laura says if alcohol is being served then plan cake for 1/3 less of your guest count. So if you have 150 guests RSVP’d, plan catering for 150, but only plan cake for 100. “Most Men,” she says, “Aren’t sweet eaters in my experience. They will drink the beer, but then not seek out a slice of yummy cake. Also remember that men who do like sweets tend to have a MONSTER sweet tooth. They are all about that slice of heaven!”
(Photographer’s sidenote: As the other half of Doug & Ashley Photography, I can tell you that Doug definitely falls into the MONSTER sweet tooth category! ๐)
Also factor in if you plan to follow tradition & save your top tier to enjoy on your one year anniversary. Miss Laura includes a complimentary anniversary cake for her orders of 50 servings or more. This can be a big help when factoring the amount you’ll need. Many couples also serve cupcakes & only have this one tier to save.
From research we have found that if you are going strictly wedding cake for your guests, then you should estimate a 3 tier cake will serve around 100 guests, a 4 tier will serve 100 – 150 guests, & a 5 tier will serve around 200 guests. Feel free to CALL Miss Laura with questions about bigger guest counts.
