The Five Basic Couple POSES
We love our couples & We LOVE capturing their love! So many couples that we work with have either never taken photos together, or have never taken professional photos. Most are nervous about looking awkward, or knowing where to stand.
Don’t worry, we’ve got you! Ashley & I have worked with our couples to ensure their photos stand out for over 10 years! Whether you’re a professional model or not, “posing” with another person is an entirely different thing. Looking natural & feeling natural is our number 1 priority.
We have you!
Today on the blog we are looking at a few of the basic poses we suggest or use with every couple to ensure they look their best! Our goal of posing is to put you into the best possible position & allow you to be yourself while looking. 🔥🔥🔥
We always spend the first part of every session with our couples getting to know them & explaining everything we plan to do! It’s our favorite time because we get to see how you are together & how you interact & we love using that to help you get those portraits that truly capture who you are as a couple. Be sure to check out Part 2 for going deeper into posing by adding a few movements. Ready? Let’s check out some basic poses to help you kill it!
1- Facing Each Other
I consider this to be the most obvious. As a couple, you probably spend most of your time in this pose. 😍😍😉 Whether you’re kissing, hugging, talking, etc. you are looking at each other while facing each other. There are so many options with this basic pose. You can sit, stand, kneel, or pick each other up. The closer to each other, the better.
2 – Door Hinges (Side by Side)
At the start of every session, I explain this basic pose. Imagine folding doors. They have hinges that connect them. Imagine your fiancé & you are joined at the hip! 😉🤣 You have hinges that connect you all the way down! So when we say, “Open,” you open into a “V” with those “Hinges”. Keep “Opening” & you’ll be side-by-side. If we say “Close”, you close on those “Hinges” all the way until guess what…you are now facing each other. 😊 You can walk hand in hand, dip, all kinds of fun options based on your “Hinged” bodies.
3 – Guy in Front
Yes, its all about you! 🤣 But your Fiancé loves attention as well! Most grooms “Don’t like taking photos.” We hear this all the time, however, it’s usually because most grooms feel just as awkward, if not more that you do. We love focusing on the guys. Making them feel valued & important helps them be less nervous, especially for the wedding day. Most guys love giving their girl a piggy back ride or other fun options. Go on, kiss his neck. Make him smile! 👄😊
4 – Girl in Front
There are so many options with this pose. You can copy the what was done in guy in front (see above pic) which is what we call the “Kitchen Pose”. Every guy has snuck up behind his girl in the kitchen & put his arms around her to hold her or scare her. Just picture yourself being in front of your Prince Charming. Or you can face your guy & do something a little more sexy like throw your leg up. It works like a dip but not as much from the side.
5 – L Shaped Bracket
Ok, I know it sounds weird, but picture the letter “L”. Basically, going back to your “Hinges,” you can rotate until your bodies shape an “L”. It honestly doesn’t matter which way you face or who is in which position. This is an awesome pose for leaning against a wall, etc.
See, its so easy to pose for your Engagement Portraits by just using options you have done many times before! Next time we’ll build on this foundation by putting some movements in to add a more natural look! See you there!
